The Hephaestus Smart Wheelchair System is envisioned as a series of components that clinicians and wheelchair manufacturers will be able to attach to standard power wheelchairs to convert them into “smart wheelchairs.” A prototype of the system has been developed and mounted on an Everest and Jennings Lancer2000 wheelchair. The prototype bases its navigation assistance behavior on the behavior developed for the NavChair Assistive Wheelchair Navigation System, but the underlying hardware and software are being designed to facilitate commercialization. This paper describes our design goals for the Hephaestus system and discusses the current status of the system prototype as well as plans for future work for medical scooters.

Evaluation of selected sidewalk pavement surfaces for vibration experienced by users of manual and powered wheelchairs.
BACKGROUND: Obstacles such as bumps, curb descents, and uneven driving surfaces cause vibrations that affect the wheelchair, and in turn, the wheelchair user. Chronic exposure can cause low-back pain, disk degeneration, and other harmful effects. Little research has been conducted to assess the vibrations experienced by wheelchair users. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to conduct an evaluation of the vibration exposure during electric-powered wheelchair driving and mechanical energy requirements for manual wheelchair propulsion over selected sidewalk surfaces. The goal was to determine the criteria for a wheelchair-pedestrian access route that does not require excessive propulsive work or expose medicare power wheelchairs users to potentially harmful vibrations. METHODS: Ten unimpaired individuals participated in this study. Six sidewalk surfaces were tested. Measured variables included power of the acceleration per octave, mechanical work to propel over surfaces, peak acceleration, and frequency at which peak acceleration occurs. RESULTS: For both the manual and electric-power wheelchairs
wheelchair, at 1 m/s, significant differences were found in peak accelerations between the seat and footrest (P < 0.0001) and between the sidewalk surfaces (P = 0.004). The greatest risk for injury caused by shock and vibration exposure occurs at frequencies near the natural frequency of seated humans (4-15 Hz). The values for work required to propel over the surfaces tested were not statistically significantly different. Besides appearance and construction, the only distinguishing characteristic was surface roughness caused by the joints. CONCLUSION: When treating the poured concrete sidewalk as the standard, surfaces 2, 3, 5, and 6 compared most favorably in terms of vibration exposure, whereas surface 4 produced mixed results. Surfaces 2, 3, 5, and 6 yielded results that were similar to the poured concrete sidewalk and could be considered acceptable for wheelchair users. In conclusion, surfaces other than the traditional poured concrete can be used for pedestrian access routes without adding vibration exposure or reducing propulsion efficiency.

Responses to the acquisition and use of power mobility by individuals who have multiple sclerosis and their families
PURPOSE: To develop an understanding of family members’ reactions to the acquisition of power wheelchairs by persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) from the perspectives of the end users and their family members. METHODS: Data were obtained through semistructured interviews with seven persons with MS using or considering power mobility and four of their family members. RESULTS: Three major themes emerged from the data. Recognizing the Need for power wheelchairs resulted from the interaction between multiple sclerosis progression and the participants’ desired performance. Family decision making and communication, insurance funding and approval, and the physical and social environment were just some of the factors affecting the process of Deciding and Obtaining the Power Mobility. Using Power Mobility resulted in positive, negative, and neutral outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: This study uncovered an overall lack of resources and some issues within the family environment, such as communication and decision making, both of which can negatively impact the acquisition and use of power mobility for persons with MS. Understanding these challenges may assist occupational therapists to facilitate this transition with their clients.

Many people are committed to their “stories” which really are excuses for not taking action. They live their life by them. I used to be one of the people committed to my stories/excuses. Believe me, it was learned behavior. I learned it from many different sources such as family, school, friends and work environments. For example, because of the influence of others at work, I always believed that it was best for me to stay home 4 work nights each week and only be out late on a work night once a week. As a result there are many things I have not done because of that limiting belief that it was “not good for me to go out too many times during the week”. One of the things I missed out on was learning Spanish, something I have wanted to do for years.
So why is it that we should be making conscious choices about which information we take in so that we are Continuously Learning?

The events that have happened in my life where I have had to get out of my comfort zone have all in some way, big or small, improved my life. There are still times where I want to wallow in my comfort zone. However, now I know the perils of staying there, so I do not stay there very long.
When I first started on my journey of building my home business, our dream was to be able to sponsor 10 children with “The Plan”. As we have learned and grown through the process our focus is now to sponsor 100 children. The learning has changed our attitude about life and money, which of course has resulted in changing our lives. The focus of our life has changed for the better.
3) Learning can keep you young
Learning assists us in adapting to change. Think of a time when you dreaded having to learn something new. Why were you dreading it? Was it because you are not in the habit of learning? Did you believe it would be too hard? Did you not see any benefit for the learning? Getting back into the habit of learning is just like starting out on a bicycle, it takes a lot more effort to get going than it does once you have attained the desired speed. When we are learning we are involved with life, we are out with our peers or a whole new group of people.
What are new information are you feeding yourself? I realized that the fiction books I was feeding myself were simply a form of escape. Very similar to the young boy we met on the streets of Le Ciba in Honduras. He was one of the kids who were abandoned to the streets as young as the age of two. What he did to escape the reality of his own life was to sniff gasoline. After meeting him I realized that I was doing the same thing by reading too many fiction books.
After that I started feeding myself with more positive material. If this is one of your escape mechanisms and you desire to change it, you may want to switch the type of books that you read. Biographies are a great way to switch from fiction because they are stories too.
Once we have begun to change our learning habits by making conscious decisions about the information we feed ourselves on, the next step is to teach what we have learned. Teaching others is the best way to learn it even better. One of my great desires is for my family and friends to learn how not to get left behind. That is the reason I choose to write these articles, because assisting you in your learning also assists me in understanding better myself.

Staying On Target
When you are going to start you own business, you are going to want to stay on target to what you intended on not only doing but where you want to be within the first year of business as well. Taking on more than you can handle while you are still a young company is not good for your self-expectations or your business either. Taking the business slow and steady will help you build steam for the long haul and you will easily increase your odds at success with the young company. You will find that you make fewer mistakes within the first years as well if you elect to take things slow and dedicated.
New Doors Are Opening
When you are running your own business, you will soon find that through your success there will be new doors opening up for you. This can be in regards to your business, and it can also include your personal affairs as well. When the company you started on your own starts to thrive, so too does the level of confidence that will radiate from you and others will quickly see it as well. This can help you with your business, and it can give you the opportunity to obtain new work as well.
